The BKFC World Heavyweight Championship is vacant, so the door is wide open for a new contender to take control of the division.
Enter Josh “Cuddly Bear” Copeland.
On Friday at BKFC 50 in Copeland’s hometown of Denver, he defeated former World Boxing Association champ Steve Herelius via third-round TKO. With the win, Copeland climbed to 2-1 in BKFC’s stacked heavyweight division, with both of his victories coming by stoppage.
The heavy-handed UFC vet is placing himself in title contention one victory at a time, but Copeland isn’t in a hurry. He’s a lot more interested in inspiring people than collecting personal accolades.
“I just want to expand my platform so I can encourage people to pursue their dreams,” he says.
“I don’t think there’s anything special about me – there are a lot of guys who are bigger, stronger, faster than me. I’m just thankful for what God has given me, and I just want to use it and show what’s possible when you don’t quit and keep pushing towards your dreams.”
With that being said, Copeland knows the influence that comes with being the top dog in one of BKFC’s most stacked weight classes. He has a simple answer when asked if he’ll hold the BKFC World Heavyweight Championship belt in 2024.
“I hope so,” he says with a smile. “If it’s in God’s will, I’d love that.”
