Former star wrestler Brandon Bushaw learning on the job with BKFC

Brandon Bushaw has dangerous striking, but he’s even more deadly on the ground.

Bushaw was a two-time state wrestling champion for Westbrook High School in Westbrook, ME. He went on to compete for Michigan State before eventually being inducted into Maine’s wrestling hall of fame. As a professional MMA fighter, he’s taken home four wins by submission on the ground.

Bushaw’s grappling prowess makes his success with Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship even more interesting. At BKFC 52, he improved to 2-0, 1 NC in the Squared Circle with a second-round KO over Josh Marer in lightweight action.

“I’m really enjoying learning something new at this stage of my career. I’ve always kind of got away with leaning on my wrestling and grappling, and that’s negated in BKFC,” he says.

“Signing with BKFC sparked a fire to really learn more about striking and footwork and combinations. I really fell in love with the process of learning, and there’s no better place to test what I’m learning than in the Squared Circle.”

Bushaw is happy with his fight-to-fight progress since debuting with BKFC in January, and he’s excited to keep working his way up the ladder in the stacked BKFC lightweight division. Bushaw hopes to go far with BKFC, but he's not rushing his journey.

“I just want to keep competing. I want to keep challenging myself to get better,” he says. “I want tough fights that I belong in – I don’t want cupcake fights and I don’t want to be fed to the wolves just yet. I just want to keep climbing the ladder until I’m ready to hang with the guys at the top of the division.

“But right now it’s just the fun of competing that’s keeping me going, and I like that.”
